I have been sleeping in hammocks for two years now, both indoors and out. This summer I live outside and was in the market for an upgrade.I ordered this one for its claims of larger size and for the mosquito net (applying DEET every night gets a little disconcerting). After trying it out in different locations for ten nights, I think I have had sufficient experience to accurately review it.
The mosquito net does a great job at keeping out insects of all sizes, and the zipper entrance seems durable. The whole thing is also very portable.Unfortunately, this is where my positive review ends. The hammock itself is very uncomfortable due to its assembly and design. Not one of the ten nights has provided what I would call restful sleep. The hammock is made from three strips of parachute nylon sewn together, and therein lies the essential flaw. The seams do not flex evenly with the material when one lies in it, creating two ridges that run the length of the hammock. When one sleeps properly in the hammock (diagonally), this means you have a seam under your shoulders/neck and one under your bum.The hammock does not provide even support and ends up being uncomfortable.
I have another parachute nylon hammock made from a single piece of material (A Grand Trunk Ultralight), and it doesn't have this problem.I have recently returned to this smaller hammock, regretting my "upgrade" attempt. This brings me to my second complaint: size.Ewins claims this is "significantly larger than a double sized bed" but I have a hard time imagining two folks even fitting in this hammock (not to mention comfort). It might be due to the seams, but I feel much more cramped in this than in my other two hammocks (the ultralight and a hand-woven Mayan double).
One last issue is the hanging set-up, which might be contributing to the ridges. The rope is looped through each end such that it does not seem to pull evenly along the hammock.I'm not sure how this affects the hanging of the hammock and if this accentuates the discomfort, but it might. In the end, I would not recommend buying this unless some design changes are implemented.Spend a little more and get a seamless hammock.
